How a frost-free drinker works (the thermos principle)
The drinker is built as a double wall of food-grade, UV-resistant polyethylene with polyurethane foam between the walls. That construction works on the thermos principle: it slows heat loss from the water, so the drinker resists freezing far longer than an open, uninsulated trough.
Water enters through a float valve in a closed compartment, which maintains a constant level and shields the mechanism from the cold. Insulation does not add heat; it conserves what the water and the incoming supply already hold. Understanding that distinction is the key to choosing between an insulation-only model and a heated one.
When insulation alone is enough

This is still a passive solution, needing no electricity. It is the natural middle step for farms whose cold spells reach well below −15 °C but do not routinely hit the extremes that call for active heating.
When you need a 24 V heating element
In severe frost, passive insulation and floating balls eventually reach their limit. For those conditions there is an optional 24 V heating element that actively warms the water, keeping it at around 15–20 °C down to roughly −30 °C.
Choose a heated model when your winters regularly fall below the range that insulation and floating balls cover, or when you need reliably warm water in the hardest cold. Base the decision on your coldest expected conditions, not the average, since it is the extreme days that stop animals drinking.
Electricity and safety
The heating element runs on 24 V, a safe low voltage, rather than mains power. It does require a power source or transformer at the drinker to step the supply down and feed the element.
That means a heated drinker adds one site requirement: a 24 V feed reaching the water point. If your location has no practical way to supply it, an insulation-only or floating-ball model may be the more realistic route. Where power is available, the low-voltage design keeps the installation straightforward and safe around livestock.
