How to Choose a Frost-Free Drinker for Livestock: A Buyer's Guide
A short, practical guide to matching an insulated drinker to your animals, herd size, location and climate. It walks you through the decisions in the order they actually matter.
Start here: which animals and how many head
Begin with the two facts that shape every other choice: the species you keep and the number of head that will drink at one point. Our drinkers are suited to cattle, horses, sheep, goats and pigs, so the model you need depends less on the animal itself than on body size, drinking behaviour and group size.
A handful of animals in a pen has very different requirements from a large cattle group on a single water point. As a rule, the more head that share one drinker, the more water volume and drinking length you need. Fix the head count first, and the choice between a bowl, a trough and a group drinker follows naturally.
Bowl, trough or group drinker
The range covers three formats. Bowls hold roughly 15–25 litres and are intended for one or two animals: individual stalls, pens and corners where space is tight. They are the simplest option where only a few head drink.
Troughs and group drinkers are built for larger cattle groups. They scale up to 460 cm in length and up to 405 litres, so several animals can drink at once without crowding a single point. Across the whole range, working volume spans 15 to 405 litres.
Choose by the number of head drinking together and the space you have. A bowl suits individual and corner positions; a trough or group drinker suits a herd sharing one location.
Barn or pasture: where it will stand
The location decides both the format and the mounting. In a barn, bowls and smaller units fit stalls, pens and corners, and drinking demand is usually concentrated in a fixed layout. On pasture or in a large open yard, a group drinker serving many head at once is normally the better fit.
Location also drives the base. Any drinker needs a stable, level footing; larger troughs and group drinkers should sit on a concrete slab so they stay firm under load and in use. Confirm your water supply reaches the spot before you settle on a position.
Heated or insulation only
Every model uses double-wall, food-grade polyethylene with polyurethane-foam insulation working on the thermos principle, so all of them resist freezing far better than an uninsulated trough. Insulation alone keeps water ice-free in moderate frost, roughly down to −15 °C, with no electricity at all.
For harder winters there are two steps up. Models with floating balls hold off stronger frost, to about −25 °C, still without power. Where frost is severe, an optional 24 V heating element keeps the water warm, around 15–20 °C, down to roughly −30 °C. Water connection and installation
Each drinker is fed by a float valve housed in a closed compartment, which holds a constant water level automatically and keeps the mechanism protected. Installation means a stable base, a water supply connected to the valve and, if you choose a heated model, a 24 V power feed with a suitable power source or transformer.
For larger troughs and group drinkers, plan for a concrete slab as the foundation. Sorting out the base, the water line and, where relevant, the low-voltage supply before delivery makes commissioning straightforward.
What to look for when choosing
Start with the construction: a high-strength double wall of food-grade, UV-resistant polyethylene with polyurethane foam insulation is what carries a drinker through years of outdoor use.
